|Time| 18:3o ~ 20:oo
|Location| Umi Sushi Express, Shop 2 505 George St Sydney
|Price| @$2* per plate (until 18/6/14)

The $2 Sushi Special is on again !!! If you missed out last year at Umi Sushi, Darling Quarter, then you better be quick to get their deal – from 11/6/14 ~ 18/6/14 !

If you haven’t been here before, it’s located within the Event Cinemas Complex (if you’re still not sure, look out for the line of people and you know you’re at the right place).

The line this year was unexpectedly shorter. When I got there to wait in the queue, there were only approx 10 people (or 5 groups) waiting in front of me. When I came back from the toilet after my initial 15 minute wait (less than 30 minute wait time in total), we were already seated down.

The Line | Umi Sushi Express |

Umi Sushi Express is cosy and has a modern Japanese fitout with the electronic boards, like those you would typically see when you’re in Japan. There were also four sushi masters in the middle of the train that night to make sure that the orders came quick and fast.

Umi Sushi Express also have a good range of choices which includes Seared Nigiri, Nigiri, Creative Roll, Gunkan, Inside Out Roll and much more… To enjoy your $2 sushi, all you need to do is like and check in Umi Sushi Express on Facebook.

Sushi @ $2 per plate | Umi Sushi Express |

Here are some of our Umi favourites from our visit –

  • Scampi – You get to order 2 plates of scampi per person, so I say, why not !? 🙂
  • Sea Urchin – Even though they were small, at least we got to enjoy that little bit for $2 – still worth it
  • Seared Crabstick – Love the sauce on the top – we’re sauce fanatics
  • Ebi Fry (Fried Prawn) – A good break away from all the raw sushi
  • Garlic Volcano Cheese Seared Scallop – The BEST – Try it for yourself !

Scampi Sea Urchin Gunkan

Seared Crabstick Ebi FrySeared Garlic Volcano Cheese ScallopOverall we liked the food and we didn’t have a time limit about how long we could eat for, so essentially we could have stayed there for the whole night 😛

(Just thought you’d be interested: When we left to pay, a customer who ordered 23 plates for takeaway, stacked up a whopping $69 instead of the $46. That’s a potential saving of almost $20!)

Tip:

  1. Dine in, like Umi Sushi and check in Umi Sushi Express on Facebook
  2. Head in there early to line up because they don’t ask about your numbers until you’re at the front of the line. Otherwise, enjoy your Umi sushi on the last few days of their promotion!! 🙂

Japanese has always been one of our most visited cuisines e.g. sushi train, ramen shops, etc but we would like to introduce you to a moderately-priced Japanese restaurant – Izakaya Kuroki in Chatswood.
Located opposite Chatswood Chase on Victoria Avenue, Izakaya Kuroki has a cosy environment to suit private bookings.

Their menu speaks for itself because the food that you order, is exactly the same as those that are in the photos. (You can view the dinner menu on their official Facebook site here)

Once we placed the order in, the service was extremely efficient because the food almost came instantaneously.

Small Tapas

Small Tapas #1 – Tuna Wasabi Tartar

First off, we ordered the Tuna Wasabi Tartar (Small Tapas), the soft tuna mixed with a hint of wasabi mayo works quite well with a crisp water cracker as an entree.

Small Tapas #2 – Colourful Carpaccio

The next small tapas – colourful carpaccio, was exactly as the name has described it. Consisting of tuna, kingfish, prawn and salmon as the carpaccio, it was too pretty to separate them with your chopsticks. The carpaccio had a consistent thickness in every piece and the marinade also worked well together.

Small Tapas #3 – Kuroki Skewers (Miso)

We also ordered 2 pieces of the miso flavoured Kuroki skewers. These were absolutely spot on with the flavouring – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ! Adding mushroom to the Kuroki skewers, it also enhanced the sauce and juiciness of this small tapas. The skewers were also not too burnt so did not give a bad after taste and also added piggie points for this dish.

Note: Kuroki skewers also come in salt and soy flavour, so if you have room in your stomach, you may like to add these to your dinner too 🙂

Main Tapas

Main Tapas #1 – Ethnic Style Simmered Pork Belly

Although the bread was not enough for the amount of pork belly but overall the pork belly was very soft and tender and had a good proportion of the meat vs fat. As the pork belly was so flavoursome, the sauce was not necessary but does add to the overall appeal of the dish’s presentation.

How to eat this dish: Place 2 pieces of pork belly on the soft bread and enjoy!! 🙂

Main Tapas #2 – Moro-Miso Baked Chicken

If you didn’t have enough of the miso flavoured skewers, this Moro-Miso Baked Chicken plated up on pasta (not rice) also does the trick!

Moro-Miso Baked Chicken | $18.oo | Izakaya Kuroki |

Yes, as you can see, we only managed to have two bites of the first entree before everything else came all at once, very efficient service.

Noodle

Noodle #1 – Kuroki Ramen

haha yes and as piggies, we ended up having another bowl of Kuroki ramen. This ramen is a tad bit chilli for those that can’t take chilli but for those that love chilli, it’s blended very nicely into the soup base.
