We got seated down and were immediately amazed by Kepos’ breakfast menu as they had a very wide range of choices. Kepos also had a great range of drinks – coffee by the grounds, mocktails and organic tea from rabbit hole.

Drinks!!!

Drink #1 – Cappuccino ($3.5o small or $4.5o large)

The small cappuccino with the beautiful latte art flower came quite quickly as we were seated right by the coffee station. Kepos’ cups and saucers had the notable imprints of “The Grounds of Alexandria” on them. Taste wise, although the cappuccino was slightly bitter but we reckon you don’t need add any sugar in their cappuccino.

Drink #2 – Mocktails – Strawberry Rosewater Fizz ($9.oo) ❤

At first, I was quite hesitant on getting a mocktail so early in the morning but we ordered a mocktail anyway from the Kepos’ Drinks Menu but boy! was it amazing!

As soon as the mocktail came to the table, you can smell the beautiful rose flavour come through.

From the first sip, you can feel the soda water fizzing inside your palette from the strawberry mocktail. The drink was rich and full of strawberry juice and once you begin slurping through the drink it was irresistible to stop. With every sip you take from the Strawberry Rosewater Fizz, you can also taste and bite on the little strawberry seeds – a drink that’s perfect to give you a much needed kick start to your day.

Food #1 – Kepos Benedict – smoked salmon, green tahini, poached eggs, steamed leek, milk bread ($19.oo)

Kepos Benedict came 5 minutes after our drinks arrived. The whole dish was beautifully presented with vibrant spring-like colours from the top garnishes to the bottom slice of milk bread.

We love it when restaurants do their own creative take on typical traditional dishes and Kepos Street Kitchen did exactly just that. They replaced the traditional Hollandaise sauce with a slight twist. The green tahini had the right consistency of smoothness and its flavours blended in well with their eggs. Hidden under the smooth green tahini were two beautiful poached eggs and smoked salmon.  For me, the green tahini also acted as a great “dipping” sauce for the soft milk bread at the bottom of the dish.

Food #2 – Moroccan lamb and pine nut cigars, watercress, poached eggs, goats cheese ($17.oo)

The second dish Moroccan lamb and pine nut cigars was different to what we had imagined. The cigars were essentially “spring rolls” filled with moroccan lamb and pine nuts.

The moroccan lamb mince filling was flavoursome and did not have the distinctive taste or smell of lamb. There was a small serving of watercress salad, two poached eggs and soft goat cheese. Again the eggs were poached beautifully but the dish would probably be better if it had more salad. If you are looking to have a full breakfast to kick start your day, you might want to reconsider choosing this dish.

LUNCH TIME !!!

On a separate occasion, we also came back to this restaurant the second time to try out their lunch menu. The line was still an hour wait but they do serve top notch food. They start serving the lunch menu from 12.oo pm on the weekends so make sure you get here at about 11.3o to get seated for lunch 🙂

Whilst you wait in line for your name to be called, Kepos has a range of desserts for you to snack on and the range is different every time you go. It varies from Chocolate & Cheese Brownie ($4.oo), Lemon Slice ($4.oo), Chocolate, Cream & Caramel muffin ($5.oo), Lemon & Poppyseed cake ($5.oo), New York Baked Cheese cake ($6.oo) Ricotta, Pinenut & Cranberry cake GF ($6.oo).

All the desserts were too tempting and only wished we could have chosen them all. We wanted something that was not too overly sweet, so we opted for a slice of the lemon & poppyseed cake. The lemon & poppyseed slice was great to get your tastebuds starting. The lemon cake with crunchy poppy seeds topped off with zesty lemon cream cheese frosting is perfect if you’re not a chocolate fan so early in the morning.

One thing to suggest is that they should serve larger slices as we demolished it almost instantaneously but nevertheless give this a try !

Drink #3 – Mocktails – Mango & Date Crush ($9.oo)

We opted for the mango and date crush since we fell in love with the strawberry & rose fizz last time. This mocktail had a fuller and richer texture probably because of the amount of mangoes they’ve added to it yummm yummm 🙂 Since mangoes are not in season at the moment, Kepos Street Kitchen probably used “dates” to add to the sweetness.

Food #3 – Tunisian style seared yellow fin tuna, eggplant, tomato, cucumber, egg, potato, harissa dressing ($19.oo)

Our first lunch item at Kepos Street Kitchen was the Tunisian style tuna. The presentation was simply amazing !

The main element – yellow fin tuna sits nicely sliced up on top of the salad which included a mixture of eggplant, tomato, cucumber, egg and potato. The harissa dressing drizzled in the salad was slightly chilli and generally used as a main condiment in Tunisian dishes especially for fish and meat dishes. The tuna was nicely seared on the outside but firm, thick and juicy on the inside.

The helpful staff at Kepos Street Kitchen also asked us whether we would like to add any condiments for our dishes and we suggest that you put some pepper on top of tuna to bring out more of the flavour.

  • Tip: Make sure you finish the dish quickly as the oil from the harissa dressing tends to make the salad oily towards to the end of the dish

Food #4 – Southern fried chicken sandwich, middle eastern coleslaw, chermoula mayo ($18.oo)

As you can tell, we love fried food AND burgers and Kepos Street Kitchen has put our two favourites in the one dish – Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich!

As a Mediterranean restaurant, Kepos Street Kitchen adds a Mediterranean twist to the burger with middle eastern coleslaw and a Moroccan mayonnaise (Chermoula Mayo). The coleslaw is crisp and fresh which helps bring out the flavour of the Fried Chicken in the burger. Chermoula Mayo also worked really well (!) but we only wished they had a little more mayo in the burger!

The fried chicken in the burger was crispy and had a good ratio of batter vs chicken because it didn’t have alot of fried batter on the chicken pattie. This Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich dish also came with a small serve of chips on the side which was an added bonus, the only thing missing though, was probably a bottle of coke ! 😛

Overall, we loved Kepos Street Kitchen, here’s why:

(+) Mediterranean twist; Wide range of food from breakfast, lunch, dinner to dessert; attentive & helpful staff

(-) The wait in line, this might be a slight turnoff so make sure you’re patient because we thought this was well worth the wait 🙂

Tip: Get here a little earlier before the crowd comes for lunch as you’ll probably have to wait about 45 minutes to be seated.

The second of the three newest dining in Westfield Chatswood – Hurricane’s Express is a hands-down crowd pleaser. Located on Anderson Street right next to the Hoyts entrance, you can smell the ribs while waiting at the traffic lights.

Hurricane’s Express is unlike the one in the city where you have to queue up for a long time because , as the name suggest, it is EXPRESS and that’s what I love about it – you don’t need to wait too long for, well, anything!

This self serve restaurant’s concept is simple.

“You just take a menu, order at the bar, and we just take it to you.”

As this restaurant focused on speed / turnaround time for the food to come out, the customers will need to take napkins, cutlery, table water, cups, sauce, etc to their table. Hurricane’s Express also had hand sanitiser and a washing basin for hygiene too, a plus for us I reckon 🙂

We did exactly as we’re told and within 10 minutes (7 to be precise), we already received our order.

Hurricane’s Ribs, basted in the famous Original Hurricane’s basting, until caramelised.

Food #1 – 1/2 Rack of Lamb Ribs served with coleslaw

As everyone that’s been to Hurricane’s would know, you can’t go wrong with ribs when you’re at Hurricane’s, and at Chatswood, it’s not any different.

The lamb was juicy and it did not have the distinctive strong smell that’s normally associated with lamb. I also love it when barbequed food has that extra bit of black charcoal on the top (don’t worry I know not to eat too much because it is carcinogenic – cancer causing). The coleslaw was crisp and perfect to keep our tummy fresh – only wished we ordered more!

Food #2 – 1/2 Rack of Pork Ribs served with Baked Potato, sour cream & chives

Only one word to describe it – HEAVENLY !!!

The sauce that they spread over the top, made the pork ribs extra succulent ! I love the curved ribs compared to the flat lamb ribs that they serve here. I must also point out – that they do ribs much better than the one in the city ! Can you smell the pork ribs waffling through your screen at the moment *breathe in* mmmmm

The baked potato sides were also nice and warm. I also like to put a little bit of sour cream every once in a while to cleanse my palette and tummy so I don’t get overwhelmed with the food.

BURGERS

Hurricane’s burgers are made with the finest ingredients; lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickled cucumber and a brioche bun.

Food #3 – Premium Beef Burger with cheese & bacon, and monkey gland sauce

As soon as the burger came out, I knew this was it. It was a perfectly glossy and crisp looking sesame brioche bun and the burger had everything I wanted. I have a big love for burgers and this place does not disappoint. The monkey gland sauce (which is just a fancy name for the famous iconic sauce) was served on the side – I really RECOMMEND you get this sauce to spread on the inside of your brioche bun as the sauce made the burger extra juicy.

As for the burger – it was massive – you really had to hold down the two buns together to make sure you get every bit of it in your mouth. The bacon was crisp and the beef was tender and if you’re a burger fan, you must get your hands on this !

Three of the newest dining in Westfield are now a hit in Chatswood – Din Tai Fung, Hurricane’s Express and Kingston & Co but first off in this post, let’s start off with Kingston & Co, located on Anderson Street right next to Nandos.

Kingston & Co has both indoors and outdoors seating depending on your liking. If you’re like us who likes:

Greeted with a friendly waiter, he directed us to our seats and presented us with the menu for our brunch this weekend.

Kingston & Co has a good range of breakfast options available. The lunch menu also provides a list of burgers, pasta, risotto, salads, etc. and the last page contains a drinks menu with desserts available at the counter.

Drink #1 – Small Hot Chocolate ($4.oo)

The hot chocolate art was beautifully poured but once you take the first sip, we realised that looks can be deceiving. The barista had our drink too hot, way above the optimal temperature. Two minutes later, we tried to take another sip but it was still too hot. On another note, the hot chocolate also wasn’t rich enough (since I’m a lover of all things sweet), so overall impressions of drinks = below average.

Food #1 – Kingston’s works burger – Tomato, cheese, bacon, hash brown, lettuce, relish & aioli

We decided to order a burger to try out as we’ve seen burger posters for Kingston & Co advertised around Westfield Chatswood.

The Kingston’s works burger – ordered from the breakfast menu – has all the essential ingredients in this burger. We ordered this without the chips since it was too early to have chips.

It was interesting to see that the hash brown presented itself in the burger as a patty instead of the traditional beef patty burger for breakfast. The meat component came from the bacon which was easy to chew and not too crispy. Although the burger wasn’t as juicy as we liked it to be, the tomato slices in the burger made up and also contributed to the sauce.

Food #2 – House cured ocean trout – avocado, poached egg, black sesame puffed pastry, lemon jam

The house cured ocean trout was a beautifully plated brunch that I almost thought I was at a fine dining restaurant for an entree.

It was difficult to put my cutlery and start as we didn’t want to ruin the dish. We started off with the ocean trout however it did not spark up any fire with my tastebuds.

Both poached eggs were runny but would have been better if there was a slice of bread to accompany the plate instead of the puffed pastry as the puff pastry wasn’t too filling.

Also before we paid for the bill, we noticed a range of dessert available at the counter including brownies, tarts, muffins, etc. so if you’re wanting to visit Kingston & Co for a catchup with friends, try out their daily desserts special.

Overall the food presentation added some piggies points to this review however before we re-visit again, the food quality may need a slight improvement (purely based on our experience today).

One of the brunch places we went to late last year that we found quite enjoyable was Trio. It’s at a really good location because it’s located just off the main road in Bondi, opposite the beach. So if you like sitting outdoors / have pets or prams / love the beach / ocean view or all of the above, then this is for you.
Even though there was a 30-minute wait to get a table, by the time you drop your name and number, have a walk around Bondi, they would have called you back and have been seated already. We got a seat outside the cafe which was perfect for the weather that day.

As Trio was first in first serve, their service was also first in first serve. Being a weekend, they might have been a bit busy. They weren’t able to provide efficient service but still, we managed to place our order sitting outside enjoying the beautiful beach / ocean view.

We placed our order and the cappuccino finally came.
(+) The cappuccino was nice and not too bitter. I also liked how it had a trio logo on it representing the cafe which I thought was a great idea too.
(-) Not sure if it was because we took photos for too long or talked a bit too much before drinking the coffee, we realised the coffee could have been a little hotter.

Brekkie #1 Trio Breakfast Burrito $20

Shredded chorizo chilli, scrambled eggs with cheddar & chilli, pepper & lime salsa, guacamole & warm tortilla, served deconstructed

(+) I quite liked the cute presentation the Trio Breakfast Burrito. Instead of just having the food scooped on the square plate, the Breakfast Burrito came in two little frying pans – one with the scrambled eggs (loved how it was nice and fluffy) and the other with the salsa and guacamole (not too chilli, good for those that can only take a slight bit of chilli).
(-) The proportion for the Burrito was a little bit too much for breakfast. We didn’t end up finishing the two pans so it was a bit of a waste.

Brekkie #2 Mediterranean Breakfast $26
Poached eggs with truffle oil on olive sourdough,served with char-grilled haloumi, crispy pancetta, semi-dried tomatoes, spinach & chorizo (Gluten Free Option available)

(+) For me, I love revealing my poached eggs on my side of bread for brunch so that it can run freely on the olive sourdough, and I wouldn’t have to madly scrape it off the plate after it’s bursted. The chorizo, haloumi and semi dried tomatoes, added a Mediterranean twist to the breakfast. The pancetta (not to be mistaken with Prosciutto) was crispy and slightly burnt but was not chewy at all.  My plate of breakfast had the right serving and is great for those that have a small appetite.

(-) I mixed the truffle oil with spinach but the full flavour of the truffle oil couldn’t come through enough. Slightly disappointed but maybe next time Trio could top it off with something else more interesting!

We went there because we had a voucher from the entertainment book so if u guys havent used the entertainment voucher, you better use it before 1st June 2014 which is about 2 weeks awayyy !

If you are looking for the best high tea place in Sydney, then you can’t miss The Lobby Lounge presented elegantly inside the 5 star Westin Hotel. As you move from the bustling city of the CBD streets, you are welcomed by the serenity and friendliness of the 5 star hotel amenities and staff.

From the moment you sit down to absorb the atmosphere and the menu, you are taken on a beautiful afternoon tea journey with the Mad Hatter. We had a hard time choosing between the three options and wondered if we should also have the “Drink Me!” Cocktail or the Queen of Hearts Champagne. After a few debates, we opted for the standard “A Mad Tea Party” option and boy, was it a mad TEA party.

The mad TEA party A wide range of Jing tea selection surely does not disappoint for a 5 star experience. Included in “A Mad Tea Party”, is the option to swap from a standard pot of tea to a premium if you decide to explore your taste buds with the bottomless cups of tea offer.

P ordered Whole Rosebuds which had the beautiful rose buds blossoming on top of your pot and the smell of the subtle rose flavour floating through even before you take your first sip. As she took her first sip, she described it as having a soft rose flavour which was not too overpowering and seemed to compliment the afternoon tea.

After the first pot, she decided to go for a complimentary upgrade to the premium Silver Needle. As the name suggests, Silver Needle did not expand and still stood long and tall like a needle even after a refill (or maybe two). The Silver Needle has a relaxing green tea flavour and also came with a small jar of honey should you wish to add that in.

As for me, I have a thing for green tea and the premium Jasmine Pearls seemed to have ticked all my boxes. If you are a fan of strong green tea, this will be the one to pick. The first sip had a decent jasmine taste which was perfect but as you pour out your second cup, the wholesome flavour of the jasmine tea shines through quite strongly.

Just as we settle in on our tea, the friendly wait staff brings out two sets of afternoon tea right before our eyes. Separated into two layers, the sweets were on the top, while the savoury sits comfortably in the second tier.

Savoury #1 – Tweedledee & Tweedledum – Roasted Beef and Fresh Asparagus Roulade on Mini Laugen

Tweedlee & Tweedledum are two identical food items just like how they were in “Alice in Wonderland”. The combination of the sauce and minimalistic veggies on the bread made it less dry. The thickness of the roasted beef was also just right and fitted perfectly on the mini laugen bread.

Savoury #2 – Caterpillar – Cherry Bocconcini & Tomato on Fresh Green Salad Boat

The Caterpillar was a light and refreshing salad that included a separate plate of vinaigrette dressing to share between two people. The cherry bocconcini and tomatoes were all small mouthfuls which matched quite well in terms of shape and colour.

Savoury #3 – Alice in Wonderland – Alaskan crabmeat salad on double bread wrapped in cucumber

Alice in Wonderland was treated like a princess by pairing the soft bread with the delicate Alaskan crabmeat . The only critism: Not enough crabmeat ! It was too good, it was gone in a mouthful, maybe they could stack the crabmeat up a little higher 😛

Sweet #1 – The Mad Hatter’s Hat – Rich Dark Chocolate Mud Cake encased in Chocolate Icing

Now comes the interested sweet section, the mad hatter’s hat. Without reading the description on the menu, you would not have guessed that it had rich dark chocolate mud cake inside. All you need to do is carefully take off the top of the lid and voila the chocolate mud cake is waiting for you. The Mad Hatter’s Hat was not as sweet or rich as we thought it’d be which was good because we tend to like food that are less sweet. The cake was also not too moist or bitter which made it quite pleasant to have.

Sweet #2 – The White Rabbit’s Pocket Watch – Purple Macaroon with a Blueberry Cream Filling

This one was my personal favourite and I can still taste it in my mouth after a week 🙂 The blueberry cream filling tasted similar to taro and I love taro flavoured food. I loved the creaminess of the cream filling, it was absolutely beautiful.

Sweet #3 – The Queen of Hearts – Layers of Raspberry Buttercream, Chocolate Ganache and Raspberry Jelly

The final sweet selection consisted of various layers that worked well except for the 3D love heart on the top (in my opinion). The 3D love heart was too sour for my liking but you may have a different viewpoint. Try it for yourself and let us know what you think 🙂

It also came with the scones and jam (which we forgot to take a photo of) but overall the dessert is good for those that generally don’t have a sweet tooth as these desserts are just right for our lovely taste buds.

The afternoon tea experience can be booked between 12pm to 6pm daily, giving you a plentiful two-hour time frame to enjoy your Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea journey.

Tip: Book early to make sure you can secure the date as it tends to book out quite quickly especially on the weekends. (We booked a month in advance)
